As the editor of the Bulletin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (in Chinese) and head of the new media, Zhang Fan explores diverse platforms to share the high-end science and technology content of the national science institution. The Bulletin has almost 380,000 followers on this new media platform.? Zhang and her colleagues have produced a series of videos featuring conversations with young scientists, innovating how journals communicate with scientists. Zhang talks about the Bulletin wih pride. She says it focuses on strategic and decision-making research and is the core media of CAS, serving national decision-making.
This being the age of media convergence, Zhang is exploring building a diversified communication platform for CAS. The Bulletin already has 380,000 followers on new media platform.
Zhang's goal is to be a better and research-oriented editor and she keeps honing her skills in her daily work. Yang Liuchun, executive editor-in-chief of the Bulletin,? of Chinese Academy of Sciences (in Chinese), calls her reliable and down-to-earth.
Talking about her childhood, Zhang Fan said her role models as a youngster were scientists like Li Siguang, Peng Jiamu, and Tong Dizhou. Although I didn’t become a scientist myself, I now work closely with scientists as an editor to promote the communication of scientific culture and ideas, she told us.
In 2022, Zhang won the "Outstanding Technical Editor" award at the fifth China STM Journal Young Editor Contest. In 2023, with the support of the Youth Talent Project of China STM Journals' Excellence Action Plan, she and her team produced a series of videos featuring conversations with young scientists to innovate how journals communicate with scientists.
"I hope that more young talents will join us in the future and we can work together to produce top-notch science and technology journals," Zhang said.
The trio will conduct a series of experiments in fields such as life science, fluid physics, combustion science and materials science. Notably, this is the first time that fruit flies have been taken on a Chinese space mission as experimental subjects. What made scientists choose fruit flies? What experiment will they undergo?
